1061 Peace Day

The motto for the Day Of Peace is "Peace begins with you" ... see here what Krishnamurti says on the subject:

802 War and its causes

As ever, Krishnamurti doesn't mince words ...

Other than Philosophy, Religion and Spirituality, one more interest of mine is World Peace, indeed Peace in the world of War.

So, what causes war? The Greek philosopher Thucydides thinks fear, honor, and interest - those fundamental human motivations that persuade us beyond caution - cause wars. Clausewitz tries to leach those passions out of the process and distill a calculus of political aims as the cause of war. Geoffrey Blainey has a simpler discriminator: states choose war when they think they will win. Barbara Tuchman has the simplest explanation of all: human folly. Azar Gat believes scarcity drives warfare, and, therefore, prosperity will make it obsolete.

I very much agree with this latter sentiment ... ubiquitous, world-wide equality and prosperity will make war obsolete; see my essay THREE THOUSAND.

Here's a veryin-depth look at The Reasons for War by Matthew O. Jackson, Stanford University.

At the Oxford University Press's Blog is an article: Ten Facts about World Peace. These are the chapters, but please do go to the blog for the full article:

1. Peace is more common than we think.

2. In the twenty-first century, most regions of the world are more peaceful than they have been for generations – if not ever.

3. The search for peace is as old as war itself.

4. Aggressive war was prohibited by international law in 1945.

5. Gender equality makes states and societies more peaceful.

6. Economics matters.

7. UN peacekeeping works.

8. We spend much more on war than we do on peace.

9. The Christmas truce wasn’t limited to 1914

10. 21 September marks the International Day of Peace.

It is estimated that annual cost of war is around $1trillion. By contrast, the entire UN system - its peacekeeping operations, humanitarian programs, development work and much else, costs around $50billion a year - a tiny fraction of what is spent and lost on war.

In my book en.light.en.ment I have many essays on war and peace. And I also have my Pacifist Manifesto ...
